Robert Delong

November 15, 2010

Howdy, folks.  It’s me again.  Please pardon my severe lack of posts since joining the writer’s corral a month or two ago, but I did not anticipate the amount of listening to music that this hobby would entail to be as time consuming as it actually is.  But, enough with the excuses…

Today, I wanted to write to you all about a good friend of mine, and more importantly, very talented musician, Mr. Robert Delong.  Now, I will be the first to tell you that over the last few years, I have been introduced to a myriad of very talented, very gifted people, many of which will become known to some degree within their respective communities, but never have I ever listened (or seen, or watched, or whathaveyou, as the case may be) to the product of such talent and been taken aback by the fact that I just know this dude.  Robert Delong’s music is a perfect mixture of melody and timing, of rhythm and sonic space.  His debut LP, Where We’re Going, is reminiscent of a folky sounding Kid A, but that might just be the fact that there are three guitar driven, americana-style songs on the tracklisting.  Apart from those three songs, though, the rest of the album takes you through MIDI, voice samples, and electronic whosits that grab ahold of your attention and don’t let go.  Now, this isn’t to say that the rest of the world will fade away when you put on this album, I mean, it can if you want it to, but this is a very versatile album, being able to be put on during intense study sessions to center your focus, or during get togethers as accompaniment.

More recently, Robert has been expanded his experimentation with electronics and is now doing more dance- and beat-driven music.  He is set to release a live dance album a bit later this month titles Just Movement, and I, for one, am incredibly excited.  Make sure to check out Robert both out live (most easily done if you live in the Southern California part of this beautiful country) and on tape with either Where We’re Going or, a little bit later, with Just Movement. If you like Robert’s other stuff, please make sure to sign up for his email list and “Songs of the Month” updates at  If you do, you’re bound to get something good!
