Album Update: The Knife – ‘Tomorrow, In a Year’

Let’s get this out of the way first: the beginning of the album (the first five minutes of it) consist only of breathing, water droplets, and low ambient sounds. And it doesn’t get much better from there, with the album evolving into random cymbal clashes, strange noises, and ambience before the singing starts. This is when you realize: hey, this is an opera! An opera based on the Origin of the Species by Charles Darwin! But even with this knowledge in mind the album continues to be a challenging work of modern art, often without a perceived rhyme or reason. Clocking in at a staggering 90 minutes, this is not some casual work of pop, but an ambitious, new age opera that could be one of the more difficult things I have ever listened to. As of right now, I do not like it at all, but that doesn’t stop me from appreciating it for the hard work and passion that went into it. I stopped listening thirty minutes in, but perhaps this will be a work that I return to later to listen to fully. To be honest though, I doubt it.

‘Tomorrow, In a Year’ is released ¬†digitally on February 2nd and has a physical drop on March 1st.
