My Week in Music (1-5 to 1-11)

January 11, 2010

Well, winter break is over, which marks the end of a semester and the beginning of another. Here’s to 2010 and new music listening opportunities!

The first band that I would recommend from this list is Broken Bells, about whom I have already written a post. While this band took a while to grow on me, it was very worth it. Recommended if you like anything at all by The Shins. The next band, Jaydiohead, is a mash-up done by Minty Fresh Beats between Jay-Z and Radiohead. This was released a couple of years ago and it a good mash-up between the two popular artists. Granted, this listen came on my interest in Jay-Z, not necessarily Radiohead, but that’s ok. If you love Radiohead and would be interested in hearing what it would sound like with Jay-Z rapping over it, then this mash-up is for you. This year a documentary was released called It Might Get Loud which is the reason for the next band: The White Stripes. Jack White, the lead singer and guitarist of The White Stripes, is featured as a guitar player alongside Jimmy Page (of The Yardbirds and Led Zepplin fame) and The Edge (of U2 fame). This is one of the better documentaries that I have seen and is definitely a movie that was written lovingly about the guitar. Check it out!

The New Pornographers are a more recent band for me to be listening to, recommended by a friend of mine. I have been told that this is very good road trip music. But, aside from that, this is a very catchy excellent band. The New Frontiers are a band that I got into my freshmen year of college, with their debut album Mending (2008) being one of the best records I have ever heard. I highly recommend this band to anyone who appreciates indie rock with folk flavoring. Vampire Weekend‘s debut album Vampire Weekend (2008) is one that has been in heavy rotation on my iPod and in my cd player. I cannot wait for their next album, Contra, to arrive in the mail. Looking forward to that one. Copeland‘s You Are My Sunshine continues to be their best album in my opinion; their recent disbanding a shame. And, for the first time, I will not recommend the last band, An Arrow in Flight. It takes a lot for me to dislike music, but these guys seem to have gone out of their way for me to just downright not enjoy their album. I guess I would label it as Punk/Hardcore, but to be honest I have no idea what to call it other than terrible.

Ha ha, sorry to end this weeks post on a down note. If you don’t want to take my word for it, check them out! How has your week and new year been? Any recently released albums that you want to give a shout out to?
